CALCULATOR FOR SHOP AIR CIRCULATION/FILTRATION

There is a FREE app called Sycorp Calc that will help you figure out what kind of CFM your equipment needs to be to clear the room's air however many times a minute. Most turner shops try to aim for 6 times a minute.

For example a shop measuring 14' x 20' x 8' with a 6 times per minute air exchange would require a CFM of 572 CFM (from the calculator).  You should therefore be looking for an air circulation unit with a minimum of 600 CFM.

The app is FREE so no reason to look the other way. Your lungs will thank you.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
  • Ed Kelle has a good photography article in AAW 2012.

MISCELLANEOUS TIPS
  • An excellent article on oil finishes, their history and use
  • Here is a Wood Shrinkage Calculator Site that will tell you how much shrinkage to expect with different types of wood -- especially helpful if you are using more than one species of wood in your turning.

SAFETY TIPS
  • Health Hazards & Wood Some of the potential health hazards associated with timber use prepared by U-Beaut Enterprises     Highgate Hill, QLD Australia

ADHESIVES
  • How they work, why they work, and the proper way to use them. An excellent document prepared by Dave Paul, a long time worker in the adhesive industry. Reprinted with his permission.
  • A comprehensive list of using glue to bond different materials.

IS THERE BUTTERNUT IN YOUR FUTURE?
Paul Matteau found out the following when he wanted to cut down a Butternut tree on his property. It turns out that Butternut is listed under the Endangered Species Act, there is a $5,000 fine for dropping a tree where permission has not been granted by the ministry. It has been listed as such since 2008. Have a look at the following Ministry link to find out why.

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority has a summary article that might be easier to read. Rose Fleguel at the RCVA continues to be a go-to expert on Butternut.

  • Bill Neddow΄s Winning Picks:  Here is a way to prevent a thin bowl from flexing under speed while turning on the lathe. This comes from a chat between Bill and Terry Scott. Terry says:" Hi Bill tonight I started another plain bowl thought you'd like to see what I mean by back support I just turned a 20mm ply ring with a taper to match the slope of the bowl Hot melt glue and away you go
